Come Memorial Day, the place detonated. The doors stayed propped open, spilling Bruce and AC/DC into the street while the line to get in snaked past the laundromat. Bikini tops, sunburns, and flip-flops replaced the winter flannel crowd. Every stool was claimed, the pool tables became drink-holding surfaces, and the bar itself turned into a sweaty, laughing gauntlet where you ordered by yelling and paid by slamming bills on the rail. Bartenders (usually just two heroes named Donna and Marie) poured rail vodka like fire hoses and somehow still remembered your name from last August.
And Sunday bingo? Pure chaos and religion rolled into one. Started at 4 p.m. sharp, but people were three-deep at the bar by 2 waiting for cards. Fifty-cent cards, $500 jackpots, and Donna on the mic calling numbers with the speed of an auctioneer and the mouth of a sailor. The room roared every time someone yelled a false bingo (and they always did). Losers threw their cards in the air like confetti; winners got paid in crumpled cash from a Crown Royal bag. If you spilled a beer on the caller’s sheets, you bought the bar a round. No exceptions.
It was less a bar than a summer fever dream: loud, half-naked, cheap, and absolutely perfect. When the last bingo ball dropped, half the crowd spilled onto 16th Avenue with pitchers in hand, screaming into the night like they’d just won the World Series. That was the Tropical Pub in July: glorious, unhinged, and gone forever.
