Hogan’s Dining: A Bloomfield Hills Staple

Nestled at the bustling corner of Telegraph and Maple Roads in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Hogan’s Dining—affectionately known as Hogan’s Restaurant—stood as a golf-inspired haven for over four decades, from 1974 until its poignant closure on January 31, 2016. Named after legendary golfer Ben Hogan, the spot paid homage to the nearby Oakland Hills Country Club, drawing in pros, locals, and families alike with its unpretentious charm and hearty American fare. The site, originally a Howard Johnson’s acquired by owner Richard Bochenek Sr. in 1961, transformed into this beloved eatery under his vision, evolving from a simple motor lodge diner into a vibrant neighborhood anchor.

Hogan’s menu was a testament to Midwestern comfort: juicy steaks grilled to perfection, fresh seafood platters, creamy pastas, and veggie delights, all paired with upscale bar bites like nachos supreme—layered with chicken, jalapeños, and pico de gallo—or oven-roasted garlic bulbs drizzled in gorgonzola. Appetizers such as jumbo potato skins stuffed with spiced beef kept the energy high, while gourmet desserts, including a legendary mud pie, offered sweet redemption for any savory skeptics. Prices hovered affordably ($10–$25 entrées), making it accessible for date nights or post-round gatherings. Fridays buzzed with trivia, Saturdays with live tunes, and the free Wi-Fi sealed its role as a social hub.

For 43 devoted staff and countless regulars, it was more than meals; it was memories forged over 40 years. Owner Rick Bochenek Jr. sold the property to developers, who razed it for a strip mall, marking the end of an era. “It was a good run,” he reflected, as the demolition loomed. Today, the site echoes with ghosts of laughter and clinking glasses, a fairway fairytale faded into Bloomfield’s storied past.
